In my opinion the needs of special people should not take precedent over the needs of the rest of the group when the group cannot control their level of interaction with the individual. I strongly suspect every bit of my perception is linked to that year. I know lots of people who like to volunteer with people who are non/low verbal or are delinquent students, and the world needs that, but I will literally never feel comfortable with that now. I don’t have a lot of tolerance for those behaviors now, probably because I was literally forced to be around it and have no power to stop it- now I still get that awful feeling of being powerless in similar situations, which I absolutely hate and so actively avoid. It’s a shame really, because those feelings of total ick that developed around those groups in my class have probably shaped my worldview in a lot of ways. My teacher was the better teacher of the options, but I always felt like Lena got soo lucky to get to leave that class. The delinquent was such a bully that my best friend’s mom put her in another classroom halfway through the year. HOWEVER, what that meant is that the juvenile delinquent ALSO got put in my class because “there was an extra adult in case something happened” (oh joy). The highly special needs one (couldn’t walk, couldn’t talk, yelled unintelligibly anytime she was told to do something or often for no reason) had a teacher’s aide, which should have made the situation better (in theory). She got all the shit kids and they made 5th year hell on a daily basis. I had a similar situation in 5th grade- my teacher was the “strong one,” aka the former military helicopter pilot. Tbh I’m glad to hear this is not working.
